The Downtown Boxing Gym (DBG) doesn’t train champions for the ring; they equip young people to become champions in life. This Detroit afterschool program builds deep connections with youth that provide the foundation for every young person to achieve their personal, academic, and physical goals. With a 100% graduation rate and 98% post-secondary education continuation, DBG proves that its relationship-driven and individualized approach leads to real, lasting success.
Every day at DBG is intentionally designed to unlock potential. Students engage in a comprehensive experience that combines academic support, enrichment activities, team bonding, skill building, and their signature "Books Before Boxing" approach.
According to Jacye, age 9, a student at Downtown Boxing Gym, "A lot of people might think that all you do is box, but that's wrong. They teach you self-discipline so you can be better and get prepared for the world."

At the center of DBG is a core commitment to deep, lasting relationships. The program invests in staff and coaches who are trained to build positive, long-term relationships with students as they progress through the program. And, DBG embeds opportunities to cultivate relationships with students throughout the programming — from daily check-ins and one-on-one tutoring, to regular huddles with their student relationships manager and family dinners. Staff are committed to relationships built on mutual respect and trust. As their culture statement reads, “Don't ask someone to be something you're not being.” The proof that youth feel strongly connected is clear: DBG has a 98% retention rate, with students staying in the program an average of seven years.
Youth help determine the activities offered, whether through informal conversation or polling and surveys. While boxing and conditioning are always available, students can choose from a variety of other options, from team sports and STEAM labs to jewelry making and cooking.
Each day ends with a fresh-cooked, family-style dinner, where students and coaches come together to share a meal and build community.
Engaging in new sports is an important part of the culture at DBG, reinforcing the idea that success isn’t about creating the next superstar athlete, but about embracing new challenges, building camaraderie, and gaining skills that extend beyond the field.
