SPORTS IN AFTERSCHOOL, STORIES FROM THE FIELD

Sound Mind, Sound Body, Strong Futures

Sound Mind Sound Body (SMSB) is transforming the lives of young people in Detroit. What began as a football camp now serves more than 8,000 students annually through out-of-school-time programming, offering a variety of sports, tutoring, leadership development, mentoring, and college-readiness support.

By using sports as a vehicle to connect with students, SMSB promotes the belief that “equal amounts of energy must be applied to both books and ball.” This Detroit afterschool program helps young people reach their highest potential, not just through sports, but by prioritizing the “sound mind” first. Participants receive academic and literacy support, develop STEM and 21st-century skills, and access college-readiness and post-secondary guidance.

The SMSB Talent Search Program supports students throughout their post-secondary journey by providing academic, career, and financial counseling. Students are mentored by coaches or program alumni who regularly check in on their progress, grades, and emotional well-being. Through the program, participants receive guidance on course selection, co-design a four-year graduation plan, receive assistance with financial aid and scholarship applications, and participate in college tours.

Being a part of the Sound Mind Sound Body program teaches me how to communicate and be a better man. I am taught about things outside of just football.”

With over 30,000 athletes trained over the last 20 years, and six students drafted to the NFL in 2025, SMSB pushes students to be their best in whatever path they choose: “If you have a sound mind — if you can read, write, and articulate — you can have a career way outside of the playing field.”

How SMSB Powers Play:

Books and ball

With an emphasis on “sound mind” first, students receive targeted academic support and mentorship before or alongside their participation in sports. This approach equips them with a well-rounded skill set, helping them excel both on and off the field.

The power of mentors

SMSB pairs students with coaches and mentors who listen, guide, and support them throughout their participation in the program. This approach ensures that support is personalized and aligned with each student’s goals — whether athletic, academic, or personal.

Exposure to multiple sports

Originally a football camp, SMSB now offers a variety of athletic activities: cheer, basketball, marching band. This gives students daily opportunities to try multiple sports, develop new skills, and find what they enjoy most.
